This might be a case of DDG optimizing for the wrong metrics. It’s hard to balance between “you grow what you measure” and “you’re measuring the wrong thing.”

Their core value proposition is being an alternative to Google. Once you ruin goodwill, it’s hard to recover it.

For search history, it’s like reading someone’s mind. Search engines know us better than we know ourselves in some cases.
